Instead of getting high on 4/20, I’m going to post gameplay from Rez, which is a videogame that not enough people have played and among my favorites.
If I cared about the pointless ‘videogames being art’ debate, I would put this forward as a suggestion. I love the feeling the whole game gave me when I played it back in 2003, the way the music and game were synced up and the effects and imagery used in some of the levels was really special. It puts you into such a state of flow that I haven’t experienced with another game.
In short, the game deals with a AI gaining sentience. This level uses the analogy of evolution, you can see it primarily in the messages displayed, and how the level progresses from underwater to above land but also in the evolution of enemy design, both visually and gameplay wise.
The video is really long, I like it when the lyrics kick in (around 3:30)
