Underworld

Playthrough of Area1 from the Rez beta, Vibes.

The beta track (a mix of Underworld’s “Rez”, “Cowgirl”, and “Born Slippy”) has a distinctive feel that’s much different from that of the song that would replace it, “Buggie Running Beeps 01”.

It’s so different from Keiichi Sugiyama’s song that I don’t think it’s even fair to really compare the two.

Interesting enough, some of the sound samples in Area1 are sampled from this track. Unlike the beta track, they weren’t cut out for the final version of Rez.

Most fans know this already, but Rez got its name from the 1993 Underworld song of the same name. The song has a pretty good build-up that’s comparable to the songs in the game. It’s pretty easy to hear how this song possibly influenced the feel of the game as well with Underworld’s influental and signature dark, technical sound.

Originally the game was supposed to include a track from Underworld (a mix of this song, “Born Slippy”, and “Cowgirl”), but was pulled out and replaced with the original Keiichi Sugiyama song “Buggie Running Beeps 01”. I’ll be posting a video of the beta Area1 at some point soon.

Personally I love Rez and Underworld to death and upon learning about the connection between the two, my mind pretty much exploded.
